Does it cost a lot of money to be a Mentor? Once I become a mentor how do I begin contact with my mentee? What happens if I run into a problem with my mentee? How often can I visit my mentee? What does Mentoring mean to a child? What if my mentee is not bonding with me? It is rare for a young person to immediately trust an adult. And to go even further, and open up to this “stranger” will take a long time; some kids will test the relationship by not showing up, or being very shy and quiet – our staff can help you determine if this is “normal” behavior or if it is a sign that your match should end (we have wonderful meetings to help matches end). HOWEVER; you as a Mentor should not interpret caution as rejection! It is more likely that your mentee is just waiting for proof that you are trustworthy. Patience and time is the key. Can one hour a week really make an impact?
