Do YOU like to play or watch baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey or any form of fun pickup games? Do YOU want to make our community a safer place for everyone? Do YOU like to read to kids? Do YOU want to teach a kid what you know about the best way to wash a car? Give it a tune up? Do YOU want to share all the fun things you set aside time to do?
If YOU said yes to any of these – then YOU are the type of volunteer we want to train to be a mentor.
How about sharing that time with a kiddo who may not have ever had the opportunity to experience these basic and fun activities? Let them tag along with you to something you were going to do anyway, and without even trying you will help them learn valuable life skills.
What do you set aside time to do? Stack wood? Walk your dogs? How about sharing that time with a child who may not have a dog, or know how to stack a cord well?
We pair up kid’s right in our local area with adult mentors who live in the same community. These pairs are matched according to what the adult wants to focus on – it could be reading, it could be hiking; it could be going to doing crafts, or fixing your car together! Then we find a young person who lives near you and has similar interests.
“I felt like I was using my mentee as slave labor, but he wanted to help wash my car every week. Then I found out his family didn’t have a car, each time he washed it he was seeing a successful future for himself.” – Larry, a mentor in Rutland City |
